As I announced a few weeks ago, this week’s posts will be dedicated to modest bridal attire with a few marriage posts in between.
I will highlight at least one designer every day, starting with the more traditionally modest styles and ending with the more fashion forward designers.
If you’re in the LA area in the next few days, my friends over at Los Angeles Pregnancy Services are hosting a benefit dinner Thursday evening at a ritzy hotel in downtown LA. Famed Catholic speaker Jesse Romero will be giving the keynote speech.
LAPS is slowly converting from a “center” to a “clinic,” the difference between the two being medical staff and medical equipment. Research has shown that a simple ultrasound can have an incredibly powerful influence on the choice between abortion and life for a child. But LAPS, and Catholic pregnancy centers like LAPS go so much further than pre-natal counseling—LAPS provides financial assistance, parenting classes, adoption placements, chastity talks, NFP courses, etc. LAPS also provides post-abortion counseling for women who need it.
This is all to say that LAPS is doing some amazing work. I’m pretty sure the deadline has passed to RSVP for the actual dinner, but if you can, please consider donating to the center that is saving so many lives.
In other news…I see that “The Butterfly Circus”, winner of the 2009 DoorPost Film Project, is making its way around the blogosphere. Catholic Underground LA will be screening the film followed by a panel discussion with the actors and director this Saturday. (For you swooning ladies, I’m pretty sure Eduardo Verastegui is coming.) If you’re not my friend on Facebook, look to the sidebar, add me, and I’ll send you an invite to the event.
~Rebecca
PS: I haven’t had a chance to get my still camera fixed yet, but I will try to take some photos of my outfits for each event.
…Because I hate cap sleeves…and I know you do too…
I’ve decided that the 2nd annual Modestia Bridal Week will take place the week of Nov. 2nd. For you readers that were not around last year, Bridal Week is the one week out of the year where I dedicate all posts to everything bridal, from appropriate bridal attire to marriage theology.
In addition to actual gowns, last year I focused on the importance of modest bridal attire. This year, I think I’m going to do some apologetics on Christian marriage in general. I’m currently taking a class entitled, “Christian Marriage & Sexuality.” Instead of learning, I’ve spent most of my time in class correcting misconceptions about Christians, sex, marriage, and that pesky “sexist” little book we call the Bible. As a result, I will be spending some time on these topics too. (As always, questions and suggestions for topics are welcome.)
I was taking a look at the links I have posted in the modest bridal section, and it occured to me that this trend of throwing cap sleeves on dresses has really got to go. This year I will be highlighting mainly unknown designers that are creating beautiful, trendy gowns with style and class.
Things are a little bit better. My hospitalized aunt has woken up and is getting stronger little by little each day. I really appreciate the prayers and well wishes sent to me via email and Facebook.
I don’t think I mentioned this, but my car was totaled in an accident about six weeks ago. I just got a new car over the weekend…when someone hit my mother as she was driving in the new car after having just registered it a few hours before. It looks like the car may be totaled, so I’m probably going to have to buy another car. LOL!
Although things have been very dramatic the past few weeks, God is always present in our circumstances, right? For the record, I am doing very well, so don’t worry.
FYI, the reason there have not been many posts as of late is because I have a close family member in the hospital currently fighting for her life against the H1N1 flu, aka the swine flu. In between hospital visits, phone calls, school, work—basically all of my real life obligations, I haven’t had too much time to post. I’m going to take a break from now until next week.
Your prayers for my family member and her amazing team of doctors and nurses would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much for your prayers for my friend in the hospital. She is doing MUCH better and considering her progress after such a traumatic event, I am convinced your storming heaven has helped her tremendously!
In other news…
The Decent Exposure fashion show is upon us! At this Thursday’s session, the girls will get tips on how to “modestize” (haha Jessica made that word up) their wardrobe and get a crash runway course from a member of Models for Christ, a fellowship organization of Christian fashion models here in Los Angeles.
TV actor J. Skylar Testa has agreed to host the show. You may have seen him in Bones, CSI Miami, etc. Actress and singer Caitlin Crosby will be performing at the show AND serving as our keynote speaker. Caitlin has an awesome website called Love Your Flawz.com where she ministers to young women about female body image.
BTW, People Magazine just did an article on Caitlin and her really amazing CD that is on sale now.
As you have already seen, posting will be extremely lacking this week as we make the final preparations for the show. All of the clothes have arrived, but we still have to go shopping tomorrow morning for shoes and more accessories.
If you are in the SoCal area, please do consider attending the show. Tickets can be purchased at our website.
One of my girlfriends was shot in the chest after being robbed last night. I’ve been at the hospital since early this morning. She was talking when I left, however she is still in the intensive care unit. Your prayers for her recovery would be appreciated.
I’ve still have a lot of toying to do with it, but check out the new website for Decent Exposure. The speakers page is up and running, as is the schedule of events!
To my fellow blogger friends, now would be the appropriate time to make a post about the program (if you want to.) I have to head down to Orange County in a bit; I’ll make a post about the first session tomorrow!
BTW, sorry the posts are a bit lacking. I’m crazy busy with work and planning the Decent Exposure fashion show. I’ve been put in charge of contacting the designers and have been fielding emails for a week!
Once I get the comprehensive list of designers I will post it; looks like we will have a nice balance of the more popular modest designers as well as regular companies.
I’ve been hinting at it for a while now, and am so relieved I can now officially announce Decent Exposure, a modest fashion formation program for teenage girls, set to begin next week.
Together with Jessica Rey of Rey Swimwear, Katelyn Rose of Suddenly Darling, and a number of modest-minded friends, actors, and models from LA, we will be teaching our very first class of girls about Catholic womanhood, chastity, modesty, and of course—fashion! The four-week program will conclude with a fashion show on July 11th. We’re still in the planning phase for that show, but once we firm up the celebrity host and entertainment I will announce the info. At the moment we’re talking to Beverley Mitchell’s people. (Remember Lucy from 7th Heaven?)
The website for DE is being built as I type, but in the meantime we would love for you to join our group on Facebook.
Each week I will blog about the girls’ progress. I will also be directing a reality series based on the show to be released on DVD early next year.
If you are interested in bringing Decent Exposure to your city, let me know and we will certainly work with you! This is our first go-round, but we certainly plan on taking this program to a national level. Any one of us would be available to help you plan or travel to give a talk/keynote speech.
Your prayers for the success of the program would be greatly appreciated.
I really want to thank some internet friends and print media outlets that have acknowledged Modestia and the message I am trying to send to young women over the last few weeks.
I’m getting my wisdom teeth taken out in a few hours. Allegedly I’ll be “down for a few days” but I highly doubt it. I have a zillion projects that demand my attention…that..and a Type A personality. But if there aren’t any posts for a few more days, that’s why.
Lol, those two are my favorites. You can see more photos from the conferencehere.
I’m driving back home to San Diego tonight and will be at the Thread Show at the Wonderhaus Bakeryall weekend with Jessica and Katelyn Rose of Suddenly Darling. If you’re in the area come by and say hello! There will be a number of indie designers, eco-friendly fashions, and beauty and gifting suites.
Will post photos on Monday….have a good weekend ladies!
The second ever Modestia give-a-way is sponsored by Andrea’s Beau, a premiere hair accessory online boutique. One lucky reader will win one of these super cute headbands free of charge. All you have to do is a leave a comment on the post. I will close the contest next Friday. Be sure to fill out the email box so I can contact the winner…and you get to choose which headband you want!
Happy Memorial Day! We are very blessed to live in a free country with such magnificent servicemen and women who put themselves in harm’s way to protect us. Please say a prayer at some point today for all of our armed forces here and abroad, and for those that have gone before us.
I was insanely busy with the the conference on Friday, and as you have already seen, Modest Swimwear Week is spilling over into this week’s posts. Also coming up this week will be:
+ My summer workout tips
+ My summer modesty solutions
+ New modest-minded websites
…and…
+ The second ever Modestia give-away! I won’t spoil the surprise just yet, but you’ll definitely want to enter the contest!
All of this is in addition to the regular celeb posts. Also, this week (and forever more for that matter) I want to field some of your questions. I’ve got some emails I need to answer here, but I also want to open myself up to anyone else with questions about fashion, the faith, me…anything. Readers will always have a state of anonymity. So shoot me an email, even if it’s just to say hello.
Thanks for the texts, emails, prayers, magic owls, etc.
I’m still having some health issues (mainly asthma) but I have emerged victorious from the deathbed of influenza and posting will now resume as normal.
Ladies, I would urge you to visit the following site, which really helped me get through the last week:http://doihaveswineflu.org/.
And now for my post-deathbed theme song:
And guess what? I just found a really cute loft in West LA and will be moving this weekend. It was a supreme surprise of relief as I have been apartment shopping for months with no luck.
On another note, those of you in college like me going through finals week are in my prayers.
I try to research as many apparel resources for this site as I can.
Be advised that while most of the links in my "Modest Apparel" category are from designers who specifically design modest apparel, some of the websites include only a select amount of modest choices. Modest dress is dependent on styling. If it isn't modest, make it modest.
One asterisk (*) next to a link means it is a plus size site. Two asterisks (**) indicate that the site sells both plus size and average size apparel.
