school’s here!

catholicinfilmschool on Aug 31st 2009 12:36 am

Happy First Day of School!

Today is my first day as a senior in college. I have a lot of emotions about this little fact, but I’m very excited to be back in session.  Since I hardly ever post about my own personal style, I’ve decided to post outfits similar to the ones I will be wearing this week.

I have an extremely tight schedule (and pretty much always have) so in order for me to avoid showing up to class in sweats, I typically plan my outifits. Here is something quite similar to what I’m wearing today, Monday!

School! The Monday.

My wrap skirt is not quite as detailed as the one above, but I find that grey and yellow is an underrated color combination. I’m wearing black gladiator sandals and my dear pearl earrings, which were a gift from my mother, for good luck.

I’ve got three classes today: The Gospel of John, Christian Marriage & Sexuality, and Nutrition 101 later on in the evening.

Have a good day at school!

I made a post about the title track of Britt’s second album a few months ago. I’ve been listening to her album all week and I have to say it’s fabulous.

modesty…in the car…

catholicinfilmschool on Aug 27th 2009 12:57 pm

No I’m not kidding.

A couple of months ago I was driving with a group of large—large here meaning tall— men in my vehicle when I glanced over at my passenger seat. To my surprise, my guest appeared to be in some sort of stress. He was slightly red and it was almost as if he was deliberately trying to keep his head still and eyes focused on my face during our conversation. I actually thought to myself, “What’s wrong with him?”, until I turned back to the road and glanced downward.

You see, I drive with a certain posture: my left leg is typically pulled toward my body, propped up with my left arm resting on my knee to comfortably navigate the steering wheel. The left side of the dress I was wearing had slid back, exposing part of my thigh. (That’s not modest!)

A few weeks back I told this story to a friend of mine who started laughing hysterically because her driving posture is identical to mine and she noticed the same problem, only it was with a man who was in an SUV sitting next to her in traffic.

So basically…when you’re driving with a skirt or a dress on, remember to be mindful of its err…placement…

I almost feel ridiculous making this post, but it’s true!

Pretty funny. She was promoting the new documentary, “The September Issue.”

I’m going to publish the fall movie guide next week, but here’s the trailer for the doc. It’s already playing in New York and will be in limited release Sept. 11.

oooh he’s cute…

*Drum roll please*

The role of Joseph has finally been cast!

Portuguese actor Diogo Morgado has been cast as Joseph in “Mary, Mother of Christ,” an action drama about the biblical journey of young Mary and Joseph during the terrible reign of Herod the Great.

He joins Camilla Belle, Al Pacino, Peter O’Toole and Julia Ormond in the indie movie, which is scheduled to begin principal photography in October.

Morgado turned up at the end of a global search to cast the lead. “We saw a huge amount of young actors and a couple were great,” Foley said. “We thought we had finished our search when a tape appeared with this incredible guy. A major future star walked in the room, and I knew we had found the one.”

Morgado has been one of the most recognizable actors in Portugal since his debut as a teenager 15 years ago. “Mary” marks his first role in an American production.

St. Joseph is my beloved patron saint, and I was slightly stressed about who was going to be cast in his role…but I totally approve and can’t wait to meet the actors in person. (Hopefully.) What say you? Are you excited about MMOC? It will be in wide theater distribution April 2, 2010.

fave new website = fave new swimsuit.

catholicinfilmschool on Aug 18th 2009 10:52 pm

I went to Jessica’s house yesterday to hang out and film some promos for Decent Exposure when she yelled at me, “I have to show you this website!”

LA Vintage is a new-to-me online boutique for one-of-a-kind vintage clothing. It’s pretty much the online version of my favorite vintage brick-and-mortar store Jet Rag. Everything is adorable at an affordable price, most pieces being under $50!

Low and behold, right after Jes and I plowed through the entire website oohing and ahhing, her husband brought in a package from the mail—the clothes she had previously ordered from the site including this swim dress:

The photo doesn’t do it justice. It’s even cuter in person! The bad news is that the suit was too big for Jes. The good news is that it is a perfect fit on me! And yes I’m buying it from her….

Although I myself did not purchase directly from LA Vintage, I saw the quality of the pieces and was rather impressed.  The site includes shoes and plus size clothing (the garments are pinned to fit the models, so please be sure to check the measurements before placing an order.)  Long story short, you can consider LA Vintage Modestia-approved.

Exit Question: Do you like the design of the suit? If so, I’ll pass the message along and a reproduction of it may just end up in the 2010 line of Rey Swimwear. :)

please pray for rifqa bary.

catholicinfilmschool on Aug 12th 2009 11:26 pm

In Orlando, Florida on Monday a judge ordered a 17-year old Rifqa Bary into emergency custody of the state’s Department of Children and Families. The girl fled her Muslim family in Ohio saying she was afraid her father would hurt or kill her or send her back to their native Sri Lanka because she had converted to Christianity. Yesterday’s Orlando Sentinel reports that the girl sought refuge with Florida pastor Blake Lorenz and his wife Beverly who she met through an online prayer group. According to WBNS-TV News , an attorney representing the girl’s mother said the parents were allowing their daughter to explore her Christianity. The parents say that Rifqa was not afraid of her family until she made contact with Orlando Pastor Blake Lorenz.

Unfortunately, honor killings are not a myth in our country. To my knowledge, Rifqa is not a citizen, but there are some legal loopholes to grant her some sort of asylum.

As an American, I can’t really empathize with religious oppression. Working with and talking to Vietnamese Catholics has given me a little taste of what it is like, but I acknowledge that I have never had the experience of the bible vs. the bullet. I pray that the Holy Spirit continues to guide and protect Rifqa.

Photo: Amina and Sarah Yaser, the two girls murdered in an honor killing in Texas that Rifqa makes reference to in the video.

I’ll be keeping tabs on this story, and if I find a link to a secure source for donations to her legal fund I’ll let you know.

trailer for “bright star.”

catholicinfilmschool on Aug 12th 2009 10:48 am

Ah…time for another breathless BBC romance…

I’m working on a fall movie guide with an emphasis on releases with strong female characters. From September-December there are at least 3-4 movies I’m excited about seeing, one of which is “Bright Star” that will hit theaters Sept. 18.  The fashion looks AMAZING.

Battle of the romcoms!

catholicinfilmschool on Aug 11th 2009 02:10 pm

The Ugly Truth

A fake orgasm never looked so fake…

In this romcom, Katherine Heigl plays Abby, an uptight TV producer forced to confront her rules about love and dating when she begins to produce “The Ugly Truth,” a show for women hosted by a misogynistic and disgusting playboy named Mike (Gerard Butler.) When Abby becomes interested in her new neighbor, Mike promises that if she follows his rules, she will have Colin eating out of the palm of her hand. These rules include sexing up Abby’s wardrobe and eating “phallic” shaped objects. (Errm…ok…) In the end, Abby does get Colin, a seemingly stereotypically nice guy with a fake tan and cheek bones I highly suspect have been surgically enhanced, but then realizes she’s lost herself.

Being an advocate of modesty in dress, I found the film’s approach to the topic to be full of mistakes at best. Mike explains to Abby that men are visual and therefore she needs to dress much sexier to garner the attention of men. OK, but then later on in the film he tells her she needs to keep some of her mystery to keep a guy’s attention. Well which is it Mike? Mystery or boobs on display?

The storyline continues with this battle of the sexes, and in the end the message of the film is a little fuzzy…which of course is a social commentary on dating in and of itself.

500 Days of Summer

The plot of this film can be surmised with the phrase, “the guy who wasted his time on the girl who just wanted to have fun.”

500 Days of Summer is the story of Tom Hansen (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) who is your typical average Joe—he works in an office, lives in a grungy studio apartment, goes to bars with his friends on the weekends, etc. When Tom meets Summer (Zooey Deschanel) he is convinced that she is “The One”…despite her clear statement that she isn’t looking for anything serious. (I think the audience heard it and Tom just missed it. Poor thing…) Director Mark Webb then takes us on jumps through time to see the various stages of the couple’s relationship. Signals get crossed, sex ensues, break ups and drunken karaoke songs abound…

Critics keep ranting and raving about this one, but quite honestly I found it boring most of the time. This was due large in part to the lack of character development in Summer. We spend most of the film on an emotional roller coaster with Tom, but the film never really shows the audience why we should be so in love with Summer too, only that Tom sees something phenomenal within her. Admittedly she’s got great fashion sense, but other than that, I didn’t really get it. I sat with my apathy for a while and determined that perhaps this confusion is what Webb wanted?

I found the third act of the film to be the most satisfying. The plot twist elicited a general WTF? from the entire audience. Though it wasn’t an exhilarating ride through horrible dialogue and bomb detonations, I would recommend this one.

Paper Heart

In a pseudo-documentary that isn’t (or perhaps is…or something…) Charlene Yi (played by herself) embarks on a cross-country quest to make a documentary about the definition love and she does not believe in love. Through her trek, Charlene meets Michael Cera (played by himself) and the two fall in love…or do they?

Pressured by the camera crew that now wants to include her dating life in the film, Charlene must continue to confront her pessimism about love while simultaneously falling for the quirky nice guy.

Although I have been looking forward to seeing this film since the beginning of year, I was surprised by how much I liked it. I was literally holding my stomach laughing in some areas, and can I just say I’m glad to see a film in which a normal girl gets the guy?

As a filmmaker myself, part of what I found so hilarious was the ongoing behind-the-scenes comedy within the film crew—standing in the rain, running around in grocery stores—hey it’s all for the integrity of the film man!

Charlene’s interviews of random couples were also incredibly heart-warming and gave a reality check on love and marriage not often seen in films. What is love? Is it a feeling or a decision? Charlene seems to take the opinion of the former as she doesn’t think she could ever “feel” so strongly about someone, but the stories of the couples seem to support the latter. (Duh!)

All that being said, the ending was awful…like…God-awful…and I say that because I don’t think it had enough substance for the subject matter the film was trying to undertake. Despite this, I still recommend you go check this movie out.

BTW, Charlene Yi is the co-writer of the film and only two years older than me…quite inspiring for the soon-to-be senior in film school.

juicy couture to launch “bird” collection.

catholicinfilmschool on Aug 7th 2009 11:28 am

Juicy Couture designers Pamela Skaist-Levy, left, and Gela Nash-Taylor are launching a new line called Bird.

The new, edgier line of mostly black is more sophisticated but just as versatile. Designers hope the darker look for fall will return them to the realm of serious fashion. Source

No comment on the name of the collection…but it looks like there will be some really cute jackets and layering pieces…

trend alert: denim leggings

catholicinfilmschool on Aug 5th 2009 01:10 pm

Sorry I’ve been MIA the past few days. I’m on vacay right now, and in between traveling and partying my sleeping and writing patterns are little abnormal. LOL

In my shopping excursions I’ve noticed some trends for the upcoming fall season, denim leggings being one of them.

Denim leggings have been out for a while, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone actually wearing any. I’m sure that will change this fall, given that they’re in pretty much every store I’ve visited in the last month. I tried some on with plaid shirt dress at Macy’s about a week ago:

They had a cute button detail at the bottom, but I didn’t like the fact that you could see the outline of my knees. That might make be weird or whatever, but it just looked strange to me…

I decided not to buy them and I’m glad I didn’t because I found some at Forever 21 for $16 that were a darker wash, thereby fixing my kneecap outline issue.

Will you be wearing denim leggings this fall season? This may be one of those trends that’s just not for everyone….
