I know I’ve been traveling a lot lately but I promise the blog will be back to normal next week! I’m currently at the Religious Education Congress in Anaheim. I have a bunch of stuff to post next week including at least one clothing review…see you Monday!

PS: And happy feast day of St. Joseph! (My patron saint!) St. Joseph pray for us!
While spring is most certainly upon us, It’s still pretty cold out here in LA…so what’s a girl to do? Try incorporating your leggings, blazers, and boots with your spring dresses and top them off with some cute, bright accessories. Here are some outfit ideas:
I must say that last night was the best Oscars award show I’ve seen in a long time. First and foremost, I want to send my congratulations to Kathryn Bigelow, whose HISTORIC win for Best Director just smashed a few more doors down in this business. (And yes, I am very pleased that ‘The Hurt Locker’ won for Best Picture as I hated ‘Avatar’ from start to finish…)
I also want to praise Sandra Bullok, whose acceptance speech for Best Actress totally made me cry. If you haven’t seen ‘The Blind Side’ yet, I highly suggest you do so.
Moving on to the evening’s gowns, I was quite pleased to see that aside from the usual suspects, many of the ladies decided to keep it modest. My favorite dresses were neutral and soft, complemented by more natural and fresh-faced make-up.
Sandra Bullock
Nicole Ricci
Olivia Wilde
Kathryn Bigelow…I think I would have liked to see her in something a bit more elegant, but her look is still quite pretty.
Victoria Beckham
Even some of the strapless gowns were beautifully cut…
Zoe Saldana
Amanda Seyfried
Anna Kendrick (I would have made a few modifications to this one, but the overall look is still gorgeous.)
If you follow me on twitterand/or are my friend on Facebook, you may have seen my status update yesterday about heading to a photo shoot for Decent Exposure.
Jes has written a book entitled Decent Exposure for teenage girls—which I will be sure to let you know more details about once it is printed—and the shoot was for some of the chapters. (It has TONS of modest fashion tips as well explanations and advice about being a woman in today’s world.) There are also quotes from “famous” and not-so-famous men in the book, so you get the added encouragement and insight into what a man thinks about everything from modesty to love and chastity.
Last post I wrote about how I briefly met Grant Desme, but yesterday I got the added bonus of hanging out with Grant at the shoot. We had a nice conversation about a variety of topics, and Jes and I roped him into sitting down and talking to us about femininity and manhood. He was such a good sport!
Check out a clip:
Also, I’ll be off the grid for the next couple of days. I’m heading up north to meet and interview Immaculee Ilibagiza! Immaculee is a Catholic author and speaker who at the age of 22-years-old survived the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. I’ll be filming the interview with her so I’ll share more clips from that and the DE photo shoot next week—plus I’ve got some awesome vids from Sundance that I have yet to post.
See you next week! (And your prayers for safe travels and a fruitful interview would be appreciated!)
Fr. Stan Fortuna, CFR was our performer at Catholic Underground LA over the weekend.
People keep asking me how the night went, and let me tell you, it was insane! We had the most attendees we’ve ever had (somewhere around 800) and I did not stop running around putting out fires the entire night. But I’m so glad some of you came out (I even saw some of our Decent Exposure alumni!!) and hope that you will again next month.
On another note, while I was at CU I was able to meet Grant Desme.
Grant is a former baseball player for the Oakland A’s who has just recently announced his intention to forego a career in the Major Leagues in order to become a Norbertine.
The LA Times did a really great piece on him over the weekend:
“Baseball is a good thing,” Desme said. “But that felt selfish of me, when I felt that God was calling me more. It took a while to trust that and open up to it. . . . I love the game, but I’m going to aspire to higher things.” Source
He and his friends were really sweet; pray for him and his discernment!
A reader asked me to make a post about “chaste” romantic films appropriate for young women. In honor of St. Valentine’s Day that post is on its way, however, I first want to preface it with some thoughts on “chick flicks.”
As someone in film school who has been trained to look at the messages of films critically, I am always perplexed at how people, especially women, do not know how to decipher the layers of movies and media. Every film has a message. (Or at least most of them do.) This means that all “chick flicks” have messages too. Women, especially some of you younger readers in your teens, need to be careful about the movies and TV shows that you’re watching. The phrase, “you are what you eat” springs to mind.
I’ve heard some people call chick flicks “porn for women.” At the time I didn’t understand the phrase, but years later I see its truth. I’m not telling you not to watch all movies, but we must realize that many of the representations of manhood and womanhood in today’s media are not in accordance with the Gospel. They are distortions of sexuality, pure and simple. It is not the mark of a godly man to be a vampire…regardless of how attractive that Edward Cullen is. It is the mark of a godly man to serve the Lord and the Body of Christ.
I think a lot of women, especially Christian women, have embodied the negative messages of feminism that are pushed is some of these chick flicks. (Though let me be clear here that feminism has had an appropriate role in history.) I have seen this in my own behavior, and it has taken a lot of time to re-orient my understanding of femininity. And trust me; I’m still a work in progress…
But in any case, if you have questions you will let me know of course?
The Fall 2010 NY Fashion Week kicked off this past Wednesday!
Zoe Saldana went a MAC event in this super cute ethnic inspired piece. I’m actually hoping to go to at least one African country this summer and I am determined to come back with some cool fabrics!
I’m already really liking some of the outerwear pieces from Gwen Stefani’s L.A.M.B collection…
I will be covering my fave designers all this week, so be sure to check back!
I try to research as many apparel resources for this site as I can.
Be advised that while most of the links in my "Modest Apparel" category are from designers who specifically design modest apparel, some of the websites include only a select amount of modest choices. Modest dress is dependent on styling. If it isn't modest, make it modest.
One asterisk (*) next to a link means it is a plus size site. Two asterisks (**) indicate that the site sells both plus size and average size apparel.
